Mount Gambier Christmas Parade 2016

The Mount Gambier Christmas Parade draws people from around the region who line the main street to view the annual Parade running from Commercial Street East to Vansittart Park in Commercial Street West. You will find fun for all ages with Christmas themed floats, Giant Christmas tree, Father Christmas plus many more! The Parade starts at 11am and continues for approximately one hour. Walking along the parade will be clowns and brass bands from local and interstate. The local community, schools and organisations get behind this event every year with prizes offered for the best float and entrant in various categories. Father Christmas always makes a special appearance at the end of the float. In 2016 the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade is celebrating its 57th year.

Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park

At Piccaninnie Ponds you can snorkel across the top of The Chasm and peer down into the dark depths below. The crystal clear waters have been slowly filtering through the limestone and forming the Pond's features over thousands of years. The freshwater rising to the surface under pressure has eroded a weakness in the limestone to form The Chasm, with its white walls covered in delicate green algal growth contrasting with the dark depths below.

Laughton Park Gardens and Tearooms

Laughton Park Gardens and Tearooms is a tranquil oasis consisting of a waterfall descending through four ponds into a lake with a dolphin fountain and an island. A two-storey Swiss chalet cubbyhouse furnished to scale sits above a barbecue area located beside the waterfall. Extensive rock retaining walls wind their way up the slope to an elegant English rotunda set in an amphitheatre of stone and colourful plants, backed by a large three-tiered fountain set in a rose arbour. Ducks and fish are fed on the lake. There is a new 80-foot boardwalk at the back of the lake with fish and two viewing platforms.

Umpherston Sinkhole, also known, as The Sunken Garden was once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone. The sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards. Now the topsoil down on the floor of the cave forms the perfect environment for the sunken garden.

Aquifer Tours

The Blue Lake at Mount Gambier is a unique attraction. Water in the lake is exceptionally clear, the quality is very good, but it is hard due to infiltration through limestone, which underlies the district The colour of the Blue Lake changes from dramatically grey to a vivid blue over a few days in late November. Then, after summer the colour gradually fades until the grey winter appearance is resumed.

Blue Lake Rotary Lookout

The Blue Lake Rotary Lookout provides excellent views of the Blue Lake and Blue Lake Pumping Station, the entire crater area and the rich agricultural land to the south including Mount Schank and the southern coastline of the district. Tours of Pumping Station to see the Blue Lake at close proximity are available most days. The Rotary Lookout is also known as Waworong Lookout, which is the Aboriginal word of the local Booandik Tribe for Blue Lake.

If you enjoy Australian Poetry, a visit to Dingley Dell Conservation Park is a must. In this peaceful bushland setting lies the cottage of Adam Lindsay Gordon, one of Australia's famous poets. An eccentric and talented character, Gordon lived at Dingley Dell from 1864 until 1867 where he indulged in his two great passions, horses and writing. For an insight into his colourful life, take a stroll through his cottage (now a museum) where you can see some of Gordon's personal belongings and read his lyrical works.
