Markets, whether they be for produce, trinkets, handmade arts and crafts or for just getting a great coffee and soaking up the atmosphere, are a highlight on many people’s travels. We’ve rounded up some of the best markets around Australia to visit.
MIDLAND FARMERS’ MARKET
WHEN: Sunday's 7am to 1pm
WHERE: Old Great Northern Highway, Midland
WHAT: The Midland Farmers’ Market is a stalwart of the Perth market scene – the longest running market in the city. The buzzing market presents a vast selection of fresh local produce paired with live entertainment most Sundays.

BROOME COURTHOUSE MARKETS
WHEN: Saturday 8am to 1pm all year round. Sunday 8am to 1pm from Easter weekend to Oct
WHERE: Broome Courthouse Grounds, Town Beach Reserve
WHAT: It’s like the market that just keeps giving. Located in a shady tropical garden setting (Instagram heaven) and features pearl and jewellery stands, handmade candles, soaps and leather belts. Loosen your own belt because the Ethnic food stalls are a highlight. The spring rolls and chicken satays are a favourite with locals and on a balmy night, a homemade mango ice-cream goes down a treat. Don’t forget to pick up some gourmet chutneys and jams for the van.

NEW SOUTH WALES
MULLUMBIMBY FARMERS’ MARKET
WHEN: Friday 7am to 11am
WHERE: Mullumbimby Showground, Mullumbimby
WHAT: Nestled in the foothills of Mt Chincogan lies the Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market, a hub for the town’s tight-knit community. Live local music acts play as you peruse all the market goodies. The best part? Every purchase supports local farmers, so you’re creating good for this beautiful community with every piece you take home. With regular workshops, special events, breakfast and a children’s play area on offer, it’s the perfect place to visit with friends, family and little ones.

BAROSSA FARMERS MARKETS
WHEN: Saturday 7.30am to 11.30am all year round
WHERE: Cnr Stockwell and Nuriootpa Roads, Angaston
WHAT: A perfect market for winter as it’s permanently located undercover in the Vintners Sheds, Angaston. This means you can do your shopping regardless of the weather. An amazing array of stallholders sell a beautiful selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs, chicken, duck, beef, pork, lamb, specialty breads, the Barossa’s famous smallgoods, fresh milk, stunning pastries and baked goods, honey, olive oil and olives, and confectionery. Oh, and the coffee is really, really good.

FARM GATE MARKET
WHEN: Sunday 8.30am to 1pm all year round
WHERE: Bathurst Street, Hobart
WHAT: Every Sunday, regardless of the weather, a busy street in the heart of Hobart transforms into a bustling farmers’ market. When the big brass bell rings at 8.30am sharp, it all kicks off. The market is all about Tassie produce and seasonal grub. Peruse fresh produce stalls, artisan foods and menus. Trestle tables are laden with the island’s freshest produce: from the sea to the land. Artisan producers also sell their wares. There’s olive oil, cool climate wine, boutique spirits, healthy treats, breads, sourdough donuts, jams, mustards and preserves, locally roasted coffee and hand-blended tea.

WHERE: Salamanca Place, Hobart
WHAT: Shop with a view of the historic Hobart waterfront at the weekly Salamanca Markets. From handcrafted cheese and fresh truffles to Tasmanian timber designs and art prints, stalls are as diverse as they are vibrant. While the bustling market is a haven for locals, it’s also popular with visitors from all over the world, all there to sample the enormous selection of goodies. Take the Salamanca Shuttle to the markets, tap your feet on the old cobbles to the local buskers and get involved in this historical cultural hub.

WHEN: 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturday of every month 8am to 12 midday all year round.
WHERE: Alton Reserve Echuca
WHAT: Your one stop shop to everything the fruitful Echuca Moama region has to offer. This market features the best of local produce ranging from olives, cheese, fruit, bread, a variety of wine, sweets, jams and specialty soaps and goods. With friendly stallholders and brekkie rolls to munch on while you browse the local goodies this is a must visit next time you’re visiting the region.
