Townsville boasts the viewing tunnel at the Reef HQ where you can see 150 species of marine animals without having to board a boat. There are turtle talks; shark feeding shows; and creature feature workshops, with hands-on animal encounters. Day trips with the Great Barrier Reef offer a range of experiences, including snorkelling and diving with sea turtles, stingrays, reef sharks and other marine animals and marvel at the teaming colourful life beneath the surface.
If land animals are more your speed, the Billabong Sanctuary offers up-close encounters with Australian land animals including koalas, wallabies and wombats.
